Introducing Timex Rewound - The world’s first circular program for watches

Please allow me to be one of the first to officially introduce you to Timex Rewound, Timex’s new take-back program. A first of its kind initiative focused completely on sustainability and giving back to the watch community.

Several months ago I got the the call from Timex about a special program they had slowly and secretly been working on. During my short time consulting for the brand, I was able to learn more about this wonderful program and even help identify and appraise some of the pieces you see on launch. This holds a special place in my heart, not only because I was able to take a small part in its beginnings, but also because of the tireless work Timex does to be a more sustainable, and caring brand.

The idea is simple - No watch left behind. Timex wants to back used, destined for the trash or back of the desk drawer watches, both Timex and non-Timex alike and make sure that nothing on that watch goes to waste. This is done by either upcycling, recycling, or reusing various parts of the piece - the leather bands, the case materials, movements, etc., or restoring them and selling them on the newly formed website. This follows a trend by several watch brands in recent years becoming increasingly aware of the effect waste in manufacturing has on our planet, and beginning work to right the ship. One that especially comes to mind is the Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, a partnership by Kering and Cartier welcoming other companies and stakeholders in the industry to join in their goals: building climate resilience, preserving resources, and fostering inclusiveness. I have no doubt that someone the size of Timex, continuing to make a very public pledge to do their part will have a profound, continued affect on the industry as a whole.

Stepping of my soap box now, I wanted to give you the steps to the Rewound process:

  1. You find absolutely any watch in any condition, working or not, and fill out the form here.

  2. Print out the FREE return label and package your watches in absolutely any box.

  3. Ship it off, and receive your 20% coupon for your next Timex purchase

  4. If possible, Timex will clean and restore the watch for resale on the Rewound website

  5. If non-usable, the watch will be completely recycled to ensure every material goes towards the manufacturing of new pieces, or to the many Timex partners who can use those materials.

  6. Congratulations, you just invested in a happier, cleaner world.

There is a lot I have to say about this project, but I wanted you to hear directly from the thinker-upper of Rewound, Timex’s Director of Creative Operations, Jessica Cipri.

“The concept for Timex ReWound was a spark of an idea starting about a year and a half ago. It all started while thinking about how a Timex gets passed down through generations since they are crafted to take a licking. The notion of passing down and therefore buying less is planet friendly but we wanted to expand upon this idea and the ultimate goal was to keep watches on wrists and out of landfills. Timex is the first watch brand in the world to have a circular program where we take back and resell. We take pride in  crafting watches that can last a lifetime (and then some). With our planet in mind we are proud pioneers in creating timeless watches that are equal parts environmentally friendly and beautifully crafted. Each season our collection consists of more sustainable components and technology such as ocean bound plastic, apple peal leather, zero water leather manufacturing, wheat husk straps and more. By season , Spring 2024, 50% of our new collection [will] be crafted with eco-friendly components. “

Checkout Timex Rewound, live now (with some goodies already on the site) and available to everyone in the US. If you have watches that you don’t plan to keep, restore, or sell, consider donating them to give it, or its parts a new lease on life. Timex covers the entire cost of shipping and it’s a wonderful way to ensure that no part of the watch ends up in a landfill. To learn more on how send in your well loved piece, go here.
